Arizona Rock and Roll Marathon

Well, I have had better days, but I finished the marathon yesterday just at 5 hours. The first 17 miles didn’t feel too bad (kept an ave. page of 10:26) but then at mile 19 the wheels came off. Energy was gone, felt a little weak, dizzy at times, but, I just kept moving forward. at around mile 22 I texted the spousal unit to let her know I was walking but I would make it. Then the flood of text messages on the iPhone starting from my very dear friends pushing me to the finish line. That was great.

Temps were in the mid 60’s and boy was it dry. I drank every water stop plus had my own hydration. This was only second marathon that I have run that was not part of an ironman, so trying to figure out what food to take and how much was a chore. Clearly I didn’t take or eat enough. All they had on the course was Gu, gatorade (and you never knew how strong it was going to be from one aid station to the next) and water. I just ran out of energy, period. At mile 24 I started to stop a few times, simply to bend over, stretch the back, and start walking again.

All in all the event was fun. First Rock and Roll event for me; bands, or music, every mile, very well supported, great venue with 66 degrees and knowing it was snowing at home in Seattle made it even better.

Best poster signs of the day:

“Tebow may walk on water, but he is not out here running a marathon today”, and “is that a Gu in your shorts or are you just happy to see me”.

Those were funny, and couldn’t help but smile and thank them for being out on the course.

Felt good this morning. Going to be a great day in Phoenix. Heard we have rain and possible snow in Seattle but it will be 70 here!

Nice and easy today

Yesterday was a harder run; today was a nice and easy jog as I am starting to feel the normal aches and pains right before and event… sore lower back, left hamstring seems a little strained.. time to take it easy this week.
